Kilda Shiraz 2005
I picked up a bottle of Kilda Shiraz 2005 from a store called Balducci’s in McClean, Virginia, after the noon-o’-clock high Mass at Fr. McAfee’s today. At $5.99, I thought any South Eastern Australia Shiraz was worth a try.
I was right.
This is a nice wine, a bit on the earthy side (the Shiraz wines I favor tend more toward ripe, fruity tones) but quite good. From the description on the back:
This Shiraz displays ripe berry fruit flavors with underlying spice and toasty oak characters. Nicely balanced with a generous, lingering finish, this wine makes an ideal accompaniment to red meats, barbecue and pasta dishes.
The bottle I’m drinking has been open for a couple of hours, and the flavors have mellowed nicely as the overall texture of the wine has become more smooth. It’s got a nice finish, dry but not too dry. I have a feeling this would go well with sausage.
For six bucks, this one is a steal. I can’t find it at my usual wine stores, so it looks like I’ll be heading back to the otherwise overpriced Balducci’s for more.
