On Friday, I discussed at some length my thoughts on the political realities pro-lifers must work with in this country going forward, catalyzed by Fred Thompson’s comments on Meet the Press.
Today, I see that Thompson has won the National Right to Life Committee Endorsement, a significant boost to his campaign and a fairly strong enhancement of the public’s perception of Thompson’s abortion views.
I remain unconvinced that Thompson is a serious candidate with the necessary qualities to lead this nation. We’ve been through the past eight years with that kind of President, and I’d very much like to move on to greener pastures. I do think, however, that this move could underscore my emphasis on the need for a shift in focus from federal abortion regulations to the elimination of Roe v. Wade and the restoration of states’ rights on this critical issue.
I don’t know the NRLC’s track record very well, but I seem to remember hearing that their endorsement is worth less than it used to be. If that’s the case, the significance of this may be overplayed.
All the same, it’s an interesting and (from my perspective) unexpected move in an already very odd Presidential race that I’m thinking and talking about way too much for an election still a year away.
