My wife went to Sam’s Club today to get some of the big 25lb. bags of bread flour. We’re stocking up on staples so when the economy finishes going to hell, we at least can make some kind of food to eat.
The only problem is, the bread flour was gone. All of it. They typically have palettes and palettes of the stuff, and there was just a big gaping hole.
Are people beating us to the stockpiling punch? What’s going on here?

I’m hearing similar things through my grapevine (re: Costco, for example, imposing per-customer limits on flour).
Not terribly surprising, as (a) wheat just hit record prices, while (b) people are figuring out that this “it’s the stupid economy” might not just be a blip.
We’ll see what happens to our co-op order this month.
Look on the bright side — it’s clear evidence that people are turning to making their own breadstuffs again…
