Looking For a Few Good Flicks

I swear, there are so few movies worth renting these days, I keep swapping my Netfix cue around trying to find something I feel like watching.

Have you seen anything good lately? I need movies for the grownups and movies for the kids. Please, if you feel so inclined, leave your suggestions in the comments.

My wife and I both enjoyed watching/rewatching the Die Hard trilogy for some reason.

Also, we are big fans of http://www.rifftrax.com. The Mystery Science Theater-style commentary on Casino Royale is particularly good.

When it comes to newer movies, “The Importance of Being Earnest” was very good. We also liked “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything”.

Mr Toad’s Wild Ride with Eric Idle and Terry Jones

I’ll second Danby on that one. That movie was excellent.

We really enjoyed August Rush. Dan in Real Life wasn’t my favorite movie of all time but it was worth watching.

We loved North and South by Elizabeth Glaskell. It’s a BBC production and is 4 hours long. Beware it will be hard to stop watching it if you don’t have 4 hours all at once. A new movie came out based on another book by the same author, Cranston. I haven’t seen it yet but hear it’s very good.

Enjoy the Brother Cadfael series, documentaries about Climbing Mt Everest, Bride and Prejudice (a Bollywood movie based on the Pride and Prejudice and by the same director as Bend it Like Beckham. Also found Monsoon Wedding pretty interesting. Watched Untraceable- disturbing commentary on the voyeuristic nature of the internet. Also a huge La Femme Nikita fan. I have Seasons 1 and 2 and just saw Seasons 3 and 4 at BJ’s. I’m getting them for my birthday. At the end of the day they just take the edge off.

A few family-friendly that we’ve really enjoyed, in no particular order:

    The Pursuit of Happyness
    Ratatouille
    Bella
    The Rookie
    Radio
    Hoosiers
    Glory Road
    Return to Me

“My Big Fat Greek Wedding,” is wonderful, but probably best after the kids are in bed.

“Philadelphia Story” is one of our favorite classic films, but make sure you get the original. The interplay between Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart, and Cary Grant is unbelievably good.

For family fare, all of have enjoyed the “Road to…” movies with Bing Crosby and Bob Hope.

One of the best flicks I’ve seen lately is “Going My Way” which is the first of 2 movies the Bing Crosby plays his famous Fr. O’Malley role. The whole family enjoyed this movie too.

We watch a lot of old movies. Most films that were produced under the production code that was enforced between 1934 and 1968 will not scandalize your children. Most movies in this period that deal with adult subject matter will just bore you children.

August Rush was awesome, and spiderwick chronicles was good (i dont know if that’s out yet….but its worth watching especially for kiana she would love it)
Whoever said The Importance of Being Ernest was good is right, its very funny, and quite accurate the the book/play.

I can’t remember any other good ones right now….its sad how hard it is.
