The Lucky Penny

So that lucky penny I was telling you about? The one that I gave Soph this morning? Well I called her at about 3PM to check on her, and she said, “Hello? Dad, I holding your money.” She has the attention span of a gnat, so I was impressed.

This evening, Jamie had to pick me up (I usually drive myself) and as I stepped off the train, there was Sophie, holding her hand out the window. I got to the car, not realizing her hand was clenched in a fist. I went to give her a kiss, and she dumped the contents of her hand into mine: a penny, a nickel, and a dime. Jamie informed me that it never left her possession all day.

I was amazed (and not just because she gave me a 1500% ROI). I asked her if she wanted to keep it, and she declined without hesitation. It meant more to hold on to than to have. It’s amazing how much more valuable the lessons are that I learn from my 2-year-old than from all the smart people I run into.
