The Well-Sheltered Catholic

My most recent column is up at Inside Catholic today. (For those who have been following the recent Catholic culture discussions here, you’ll find this piece treads familiar ground.)

Looks like a lively conversation. Catholics aren’t called to hide away from the world. Even the cloister or the hermitage is not a refuge from the world.
The new generation Trad lady in her shapeless plaid jumper and perpetual frown doesn’t inspire any young woman and the nice Catholic guy who can’t find a decent job because no college or business is pure enough for him is held mostly in scorn. This is especially true if his ten kids are clad in Goodwill and living in a ramshackle house in the backwoods.
I read one blog written by a man whose child was delivered by a Catholic doctor for free. The guy had little money and the doctor was kind. He and his wife were living in a motor home. He was too high minded to get a job as a professor at most Catholic colleges becuase they aren’t Catholic enough for him. He thinks he’s shielding his family. I think something far less kind.
