An Aside To The Techies

OK, so I’ve been having problems with Wordpress ever since installing version 2.6. The problems are intermittent, and while I thought I had them fixed, it appears that the site is now crashing Internet Explorer while Firefox doesn’t even notice a problem.

This is reason #473,261 why I prefer Firefox, but I digress.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled all the plugins, I can’t seem to get a specific error code to troubleshoot, and the only thing I’ve thus far avoided doing is a complete manual reinstall of wordpress, because uploading all the files to the server is tedious and I have no attention span for that sort of thing unless I have no other choice.

So, since I know I have a number of web-head readers, any thoughts?

UPDATE: It appears Fr. Z is having the same problem. A commenter posted a workaround - it appears it’s not a Wordpress issue at all but a conflict between Internet Explorer’s trusted sites feature and the SiteMeter stats package I have installed.

The workaround is as follows:

People should go get firefox: http://www.mozilla.org/

But there is a workaround (I saw this on another web site):

1. In Internet Explorer, open menu item: “Tools”…”Internet Options”
2. Click “Security” tab
3. Select “Restricted Sites”
4. Click “Sites” button
5. Under “Add this website to this zone”, enter “*.sitemeter.com” without the quotes
6. Click “Add” button
7. Close windows using “Close” or “OK”, not “Cancel”.

I tried it here at home and IE is working just fine now.

Unfortunately, the workaround is not working on my machine.  I hope this problem gets fixed soon.

Some people (thankfully not me) must use IE, particularly if they are at work, or on a vastly older machine that is not supported by Firefox (say, running Windows 98.)

Frankly, if sitemeter is causing problems with IE, you really need to think about not using it. There’s probably other free PHP-based software that could replace it.
