  1. errr… totally eludes me, I’m afraid.

  2. That’s because you’re old.

  3. I get it, but it’s not that funny.

  4. Hilary,
The characters in the last panel are Waldo, of the Where’s Waldo books, and Carmen SanDiego of the Where On Earth, In Time, In the USA, in the Universe, etc, etc Is Carmen SanDiego? series of video games, and if I recall correctly, even a terrible TV show.  Having raised kids in the 80’s I can tell you they were the standard fare for kids of that era. The point of both series was locating the title character. Waldo was hidden in a huge scene featuring hundreds of tiny people doing interesting and sometimes bizarre things. Carmen could be hunted down by learning and retaining some very basic facts about geography or history.

  5. Danby - I guess I’m the wrong age, too. I recognized Waldo in the final frame, but didn’t see how his appearence related to the rest of the cartoon.

  6. Danby, as usual, is on top of things.

Carmen Sandiego was a HUGE presence in school. We would play it on the computer all the time because it was educational, and you had to piece together clues in order to find her. I remember being perpetually frustrated because every time I caught a criminal and expected it to be her…it wasn’t.

    Waldo is more self-explanatory.

The idea that the two would have a child who would be immediately hard to find is probably increasingly humorous in proportion to how much time you spent on these activities as a kid. Everyone I’ve talked to so far who grew up in the eighties thinks this is really, really funny.

For the rest of you - sorry.

  7. My husband STILL plays the ghetto version of Where in Time is Carmen SanDiego on his Super Nintendo!  I think I may still have my Where’s Waldo books at my parents house too…funny cartoon.

  8. Funny!

I’m also reminded of the Simpsons episode where Bart is paging through a Where’s Waldo book and Waldo’s face is staring right out at him.

“Oh, he isn’t even trying anymore.”

  9. “Old”.

Yes. It’s true. I really am.

    There are compensations, however.

  10. I confess it **completely** went over my head. I thought it was some Theology of the Body joke.

  11. I didn’t get it either. And I still don’t. But I do remember hearing a tune in the 80’s that goes “where in the world is carmen san diego”. I’m not sure where it came from though.

  12. That’s what comes of raising almost a dozen gamers, starting in 1981. There was even a Carmen SanDiego spelling game, which actually helped fix the damage that two years of public school did to my eldest daughter’s ability to spell. We still have it installed somewhere. And more Waldo books kicking around the house than I care to think about.

  13. Jeff, that song was the theme song of the (terrible) Carmen SanDiego TV show.

  14. I liked that show!  It was a game show on PBS.  Rockapella did the theme song.

  15. There are compensations, however.

    Besides discounts at restaurants?

  16. There was a wonderful satirical piece that came out in 1995 or so, outlining what PBS programming would look like now that the Republicans had taken over.

My favorite was ”Where in the World is Carmen San Diego: Guest Detective Pat Buchanan helps kids build a wall around the U.S.”

  17. Dale,

No, knowing more stuff than other people and being able to say, “Well, you wouldn’t know about that, being so young an all.”

  18. Yeah, that does make for a useful stick to whack the youngins.

  19. Funny!  I get it — and I’m over 35.  Now I get to feel young and cool for the rest of the day!

  20. I thought it was funny and I’m under 25 :-p

  21. its a little funnier though if you read that the title is “Worlds Most Elusive Human Being”

  22. Sarah,

I am rolling on the floor laughing knowing that Jared still plays Where in the World is Carmen San Diego!

And yes as an 80s and 90s kid, I am very familiar with both Carmen San Diego and Waldo and I thought this cartoon was hilarious.
