I just received an e-newsletter from NDGS (Notre Dame Grad School of Christendom College) and it contained some terrible news:
RIP THOMAS VANDER WOUDE - Please pray for the ripose of the soul of Mr. Thomas Vander Woude, father of our pastor here at Queen of Apostles. He drowned yesterday while saving the life of his son who had fallen into a septic tank. Mr. Vander Woude’s children attended Christendom College, and he served five years as Athletic Director of the college. Please pray also for the recovery of his son Joseph, who is the hospital after the accident.
I don’t know the Vander Woudes, but the family is obviously in need of prayer, both for the repose of the soul of Thomas, and the consolation of the family and recovery of Joseph.
I hate to see a tragedy like this happen to anyone. It’s truly upsetting news.
UPDATE: I found a news article with more details. It appears that Mr. Vander Woude’s son Joseph is an adult with Down’s Syndrome, and fell into the septic when the lid collapsed. From the description, it sounds as though he died keeping his son above water until help could arrive.

Will say many prayers for his soul and family.
Steve,
Thanks for letting us know about this. I know nothing of the man, but that is a true hero’s death.
I do know the man for almost 20 years. He was everything and more that is said about him. He was warm and friendly but not chatty. I am still in shock and can’t believe that he is gone. His family will need and appreciate your prayers.
Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends
I do not know this man either, but he may be assured of my prayers.
This is horrible. Fr. Vander Woude is a really great priest. Eternal rest grant, oh Lord unto his father, Thomas.
